Behind The Visual Scenes

In my first presentation, I showed all the work I have compiled so far; the pictures, the theme and its development, my visual representation of the theme (the poem and sketches), and the mood board.  I explained how I came up with my theme and how it developed from ‘Future’ to ‘The Uncertainty of Life’. I discussed how I used a mind map in order to diverge and converge the theme. I also showcased my mood board to the class and explained why I chose the images and the song that I did. Apart from this, I explained the reasoning for the movement that I chose which was ‘Expressionism’. 

Now that I selected a second theme, I wanted to visualise this theme with sketches. I created four sketches that best represented my theme. Once the sketches were complete, it was time for a mood board to be drawn up. After much research, I found that the art of expressionism fits my theme quite well. The use of contrasting colours and a very distracting and disorienting image encapsulated what a very unclear future must feel for a person. Therefore, I used a few paintings from this movement. I also created a colour pallet which consists of contrasting colours to further symbolise my theme. I also used lyrics from an Adele song that show the struggles one might face when one's future is unclear.

After the theme was chosen, I researched a poem that would fit said theme. I wanted to visualise in words my theme. The poem I ended up choosing was ‘The Future’ by Rashidah Writs.  The first stanza really encapsulated what I am trying to convey with the chosen theme. It shows the anxiety and the fear that one might feel when they are uncertain of the future. After selecting the poem, I started the process of diverging the theme. I came up with a series of words and phrases through the process of another mind map and then chose 3 of those phrases and came up with another theme. These are the words I wrote down and the words I chose: Challenge of life Battle Journey The road ahead Achievements Motivation Sci-fi Robots Death Progression With the there words and phrases that I chose, I converged to the second theme. The second theme that I came up with is 'The uncertainty of life'.

Today I went to take photos of my hometown Ħaż-Żabbar. After scouting the area, I realised that there is a common theme with the area. Long roads and also long sidestreets. After photographing multiple shots of these roads, I went home and analysed each until I found the best ones. These are the seven photos that I ended up choosing. They capture the essence of the long road idea that I wanted to capture. Through a mind map, I came up with a series of words to come up with my initial theme. With this technique, I came up with the theme 'The Future'.  This theme came about because of the long and narrow roads photographed in the pictures I chose. These long roads gave me the idea of the long and baPle ahead in one’s life, and therefore the theme came into fruition.
